Proud of PEPFAR

The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief is one of the best examples of bipartisan U.S. global leadership. Through innovative, targeted, and science-based HIV prevention and treatment programming, this initiative has saved 25 million lives and counting, helped stabilize nations through health infrastructure investments, and fundamentally changed the course of the HIV pandemic.

We are Proud of PEPFAR

PEPFAR has:

  • Enabled more than 20 million people to access antiretroviral treatment
  • Ensured 5.5 million babies have been born HIV-free
  • Connected over 7.1 million orphans, vulnerable children, and their caregivers with critical care and support services
  • Reached 2.9 million adolescent girls and young women with comprehensive HIV services
  • Helped to train 340,000 health care workers to deliver and improve HIV care and other health services
  • Helped over a dozen high-burden countries achieve control over HIV
  • Improved health outcomes and helping to strengthen health systems in the countries in which it works

PEPFAR and Pandemics

PEPAR has also been essential to combatting other global health threats, including Ebola and COVID-19:

  • Helping countries prepare for effective vaccine delivery
  • Strengthening surveillance and case-finding systems
  • Providing critical laboratory and supply chain capacity
  • Deploying medical personnel and commodities
  • Leveraging expertise by rapidly coordinating with governments and others to aid national COVID responses

PEPFAR’S Impact on Broader Health Outcomes…

PEPFAR’s impact on broader health outcomes has been well documented and includes:

  • 20% lower all-cause mortality
  • A reduction in child mortality of 35% and maternal mortality by 25%
  • Increased childhood vaccinations (9% for measles, 11% for DPT, 8% for hepatitis B and 7% for maternal tetanus vaccinations)

….And Has Positive Impacts Beyond

Recent analyses have found that PEPFAR has positive outcomes beyond health, as well. For example, countries with PEPFAR funded programs experienced:

  • 42.4% increase in the share of girls and 43.1% increase in the share of boys in school [1]
  • Per capita GDP growth of 2.1% more
